About the Image(s)
Description:
During a recent trip to visit the Michigan grandkids, I had the opportunity to take some photos of Elsa (age 12) during her horse riding lessons. I
love the concentration that she shows in this photo (or is she just trying to ignore grandpa?).
Technical:
Nikon Z7ii, Z 100-400mm lens @ 400mm, 1/125/sec @ f/8, ISO 1000

Alan,
Great capture of a young girl getting focused on her hobby! I'm not bothered by clipping the top of her helmut, but others might not like that. About the only suggestion for improvement i might make is to clean up some of the small moles/blemishes on her face.   Posted: 09/08/2023 14:06:19

Alan, What a crisp image you made here out at a focal lenght of 400 mm. I feel the highlights give the image some punch.
I feel that Elsa is so intensly focused on her task/lessons that she's in a zone of learning which comes naturally to her . The space on the right of her is very large and gives a sense of openness and the space you left on the left side makes the image strong.
My only suggestion would be to bring the lens wider so that one could get a bit of a view of exactly what's in her sights - Maybe a horse ? Maybe an instructure ? Mayby a student or friend that's riding right now ?

When I got my images on the computer I was immediately struck with the intensity that Elsa showed. She was at the end of a line of other students and their horses so she is watching them and her horse as they round a corner. I do have other photos showing more of the environment, but I don't think they have the impact that this one does. I was tempted to crop in from the right, but quickly decided not to - she needed the space to look in to. I have included another photo that better shows what she is doing, but I thought that with the helmet that the viewer would know what activity she is involved in.   Posted: 09/10/2023 19:08:06
Hi Allen,
An interesting tight portrait showing the depth of concentration by the subject. A good moment in time captured.
I agree with David about the clipping of the helmet, in fact I wonder if even a slightly tighter crop up from the bottom right to further strengthen the image would be worth investigating. However, having said that, the second image you posted is a very good environmental portrait showing the subject and the story around the moment.
In the first image, if the eyes could be lightened, and the background highlights dropped a little, I think the resulting image could be even more striking.
Great shots!

Thanks for the suggestion of lightening the eyes. That would be nice improvement.   Posted: 09/15/2023 23:59:58
Great intensity. I might suggest a slight vignette to further emphasize the concentration, but I'm just a vignette kind of guy.   Posted: 09/14/2023 19:00:34
