Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse in Hannibal,MO by Alan Kiecker, QPSA

January 2022 - Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse in Hannibal,MO

About the Image(s)

My wife and I love lighthouses, visiting and photographing them whenever we can. We did not know about this lighthouse so when we saw the light atop a hill overlooking Hannibal, we had to investigate.

This is a composite of 5 photos processed with Aurora HDR. I should have taken a couple more photos with less exposure to capture more detail in the light itself. I have another HDR image where I did do this but I like this composition better.

Dang! You nailed it here!
• Leading lines - check
• Great curve leading us back to the subject - check
• Beautiful control of exposures, even in an HDR - check

I especially like the shadows and the masterful revelation of the trees, as well as the very slight glare around the light. I think it helps us to realize that this is a light source.   Posted: 01/09/2022 15:12:18

Thank you! I do prefer the detail of the lamp itself in the photo below, but I feel the composition in the submitted photo is better. I did try to merge the lamp onto the submitted photo but just could not get it to look right. A return trip will have to be made. :-)   Posted: 01/18/2022 11:23:08

Alan, Lighthouses are one of my favorite subjects too! Great capture. You would never know it was an HDR. Love the leading lines up to the light. My only suggestion would be to take a look at it in B&W and see what you think.   Posted: 01/12/2022 10:33:33

You may want to explore a collection of lighthouse photos that I have online: https://www.ourvisualpointofview.com/Photos/Lighthouses

Thanks for the suggestion to convert to B&W. It certainly was worth exploring!   Posted: 01/18/2022 11:40:39
