Abandon by David Kepley

October 2021 - Abandon

About the Image(s)

I made several images of this old abandoned house. I cannot decided whether this depicts abandonment better than none in which I cropped it down to just the bottom half of the window emphasizing the torn curtains. What do you think?

I processed the image in LRC, using the basic sliders and straightening out the lines.

Settings: Canon 7D, Mark II, Tamron Lens 70-200mm, shot at 70mm, 1/800 sec, f7.1, ISO500

I think the old lace curtains and the peeling paint say "abandoned" quite well. The image seems a little flat, but I'm not sure that I would increase the contrast. Have you considered this as B&W? Whenever I have an image where color does not play a central role in the image I think of it as a candidate for a conversion to B&W.   Posted: 10/10/2021 14:21:16

Thanks Alan. The day was overcast, which explains the flat light. I'll try bumping up the contrast a little. I really like the idea to try it in b&w. What do you think about cropping it down to just the lower portion of the window and some of the wall on the right. This would give greater emphasis on the torn lace curtains.   Posted: 10/10/2021 15:34:13

I'd give that a try, but be sure to keep some of the peeled paint boards. That really gives it the "old, abandoned" look. As you say, it would give more emphasis to the curtains. Try it out and share with us :-)   Posted: 10/10/2021 15:52:06

I do like the image, however I did not get specially catch due to those colors tones. I do agree that a B&W image could improve a lot, giving more dramatic effect.
Nice capture!!!   Posted: 10/11/2021 14:08:01
