About the Image(s)

This image is from my 2019 Alaskan trip. There are obvious ways to improve it. For example I should have used a longer exposure time and smaller aperture to get a better depth of field. Also it may be a little soft even in the foreground. I am trying to determine whether this softness feature of my photos is due to camera shake or lack of sharp focus by the camera/lens combo.

The reason for submitting this particular image is to ask does it really matter if the background is out of focus ? The foreground with the bear and billowing grass attracted me to the scene but I didn't set up my camera properly. Is the image worth saving or should I ditch it.? It's probably not competition worthy, but would any of you consider including such an image in a photo book for the trip?

Looking at your exposure settings, you certainly could have used a smaller aperture and a longer shutter speed. I would suggest cropping from the top and left placing the bear in the lower left point. This would give the bear more prominence in the photo but still keeping the photo as a nice environmental shot.   Posted: 06/10/2021 09:05:15

I agree with Alan. The bear is plenty sharp and has an interesting pose. I'd crop out most of the trees from the top and about a third off the left side. This will place the bear in the lower left corner where it will appear that he is looking up the stream going off to the upper right.   Posted: 06/11/2021 16:33:47

Good suggestions gentlemen, I think the cropping is a big improvement. I must learn to contain my excitement and think about camera settings while still on the spot instead of after the event. But despite the technical errors I think the cropped image will appear in my photo book of the trip. Thanks again.   Posted: 06/12/2021 01:38:55

A very nice image, I also feel the image needs cropping. I put the image through Topaz Studio 2, then used Topaz DeNoise Ai and Topaz Sharped Ai. I then did a tight crop on the bear and adjusted Brightness and Contrast, this is what came up with.   Posted: 06/16/2021 13:41:18
