About the Image(s)

I had a challenge to take a portrait with Rembrandt lighting. It was a challenge for me since I only have one small LED light to use (and some flashlights). I asked my son to model for me and he agreed with the condition that I wouldn't make him smile. I came close with the lighting, but it was a miss. I think if I can get him to sit for me again, I would try to raise the light up a little higher so that the nose's shadow would be a little smaller, putting the triangle of light more under the eye.

Good shot at trying to do a portrait with rembrandt lighting. I think your own critique is spot on. the triangle shadow isn't quite where you want it.
Areas for Improvement. While the eyes seem pretty sharp, the sharpness falls off pretty quickly. I try to focus on a spot between the eyes to be sure that the eyes are in focus. The subject is not quite looking at the camera. I know its your son who was probably compelled to do this, so that makes it tough. Perhaps find a more willing subject and get a more interesting pose. For lighting I recommend a studio type light with a soft box. Then you can see exactly what the lighting is doing to the subject.   Posted: 06/08/2021 09:58:12

I do not do portraits so I will be the first to say that I am completely unqualified to give comments. I think your own assessment is spot on. The shadow of the nose does need to be smaller.   Posted: 06/10/2021 08:58:59

I don't know much about portrait photography either but I see the nose shadow problem. Maybe a graduated filter could be used to make the right side darker, maybe much darker. I can see this as a cover photo for the young man's first album cover. Such renditions seem to be very popular these days. ( sorry if this is not helpful I just don't know portrait photography)   Posted: 06/22/2021 18:07:53

I like the image and the composure of the subject. Possibly the shawdow on the nose can be Photo shoped out.   Posted: 06/22/2021 18:22:44
