FIRING THE CANNON by Tom Buckard

May 2023 - FIRING THE CANNON

About the Image(s)

I needed an image for a competition coming up in the documentary category and happened to recall this one. We were in Savanah, Georgia visiting Old Fort Jackson and this young man demonstrated how to fire a cannon.

Image was shot with a Nikon D850, Nikkor 28-300 lens, ISO-1000, f/7.1, focal length was 72 mm and the shutter speed was 1/4000 of a second to try and get the cannon flash. Luckily, I also caught the firing cord in midair. No Photoshop just a crop.

Tom, what a great action shot! Your timing was perfect. I love the fire pouring out of the muzzle of the cannon. As I look at the "soldier" pulling away rapidly, I find myself wondering how loud the bang must have been. Very nice capture!   Posted: 05/01/2023 20:32:00

Nice shot Tom. Great detail and timing. I did some stuff for local Civil War Reenactors and made them look more period related. Of course a shot like this would have never happened because of the long exposure time. But, just for fun I attempted to make look a little more period.   Posted: 05/02/2023 10:03:52

Paul, really like what you to be more to the period. Almost looks like a tintype!   Posted: 05/03/2023 07:21:51

Tom, I wished I were there. I'll bet the "boom" from the canon was impressive. The flame, smoke and posture of the reenactor shows a lot of action. The lighting on the scene is great and evereything is sharp. Very, very nice shot!   Posted: 05/05/2023 08:43:50

I love the shot that tells the story, but Paul's treatment is outstanding. Either way, it's a winner..   Posted: 05/05/2023 11:46:45

Bev, I think Paul's monochrome is outstanding also. If I had time I would have done one similar for the FCCC.   Posted: 05/06/2023 06:30:08

Interesting image and should be good for documentary. Good luck with it. I like how you caught the smoke with the flame colors in it as well. Nice job.   Posted: 05/27/2023 16:16:59

Hi Marty, Thank you for the comment. It got an award in the 90 to 95 percentile two weeks ago in the Florida Council of Camera Clubs. To get the flame and some smoke probably took 30 images as fast as the camera would go to get one good one. Thanks again.   Posted: 05/27/2023 18:27:48
