CANOE CREEK KILNS by Margaret Sprott, APSA

January 2022 - CANOE CREEK KILNS

About the Image(s)

This was taken in a PA state park in December because the camera club I belong to up here had a competition with the topic of "industrial" and this was the only place we could get to in the time we had. I processed it in PhotoShop - increased the exposure and cropped it a little but did not do much else to it. The print I had made for that club meeting did not do well so this time I made it brighter and then did a sky replacement. I like it better now and will enter it in the NIH Camera Club competition next week. We'll see if it does any better this time.

I like the repetition that leads you through the image. It might be fun to try this in black and white with all the tones and textures.   Posted: 01/04/2022 11:52:29

Thank you! I think I'll try that right now.   Posted: 01/04/2022 12:43:09

Now I can't find the way to convert to B&W in PhotoShop. I'm sure I did it before but now I can't find how to do it.   Posted: 01/04/2022 13:12:54

Margaret, I like the line of kilns in this photo. Found myself wondering what they made there. I had the same thought as Lloyd about trying black and white because of all the textures. I really like the angle you chose and the sky that you added. Good luck in the competition.   Posted: 01/07/2022 14:15:32

They were used to make lime that was used to make iron.
Thanks for your complimentary comments. I'll find out how it does at our meeting on 1/11.   Posted: 01/07/2022 18:18:58

Margaret, I really like this image. I really like your shooting angle, the kilns, the trees and the sky. Sorry I can't find anything I would change. Looks like a very interesting park. We also love Harpers Ferry which is roughly 75 miles south. Nicely done Margaret.   Posted: 01/08/2022 10:38:05

Thank you so much - can't believe you can't find anything wrong but I won't argue. We've been to Harper's Ferry quite often too but our vacation house in Huntingdon, PA is really close to Canoe Creek.   Posted: 01/08/2022 16:04:04

I really like this photo. The colors are very pleasing. Even though it would be interesting in black and white, I think I prefer the color version. The repetitive races are lovely. Good job!   Posted: 01/08/2022 21:32:44
