HALF DOME IN WINTER by Lloyd Delaney

About the Image(s)

I took this shot in February of 2010. Recently a friend ask me to show her some of my Yosemite images for possible use in her Mammoth Condo. I reworked it in lightroom and Photoshop to get the look that she wanted (color and 8X10). When I was done, I decided to play with it in Black and White. This is the result. I used Lightroom brushes quite a bit to bet the tones that I wanted across the whole image.

Lloyd, I love your monochrome and I love your color image. Just my opinion both are very well done but I think the monochrome accentuates the gorgeous bridge and trees and the color accentuates Half Done and the frigid surroundings. Image positioning and sharpness is perfect. Maybe some clouds in the color image but both outstanding in my book.   Posted: 11/03/2021 08:58:15

Lloyd, I found myself having the same thoughts as Tom. Both images are beautiful, and I can't decide which I like better. The color image accentuates the reflection more, but the black and white has such interesting texture. I agree that the one streak of cloud in the color image would be better replaced by some nice puffy white clouds. Nice shot!!   Posted: 11/03/2021 09:49:51

I definitely like the black and white better because it is much more striking. I agree with the other comments and continue to be amazed at what you can do with an image.   Posted: 11/03/2021 17:09:50

Hi Lloyd. I think I said this before but I know next to nothing about taking or processing images in Black and White so I am not able to help with critique. However, I know what I like when I see it and I like this enough to want to buy it!! Is this Half Dome? The original is amazing. I am just beginning to get into landscape photography and am In awe of your work. What kind of camera and lens do you shoot with? How about your settings?   Posted: 11/07/2021 08:13:18

Hi Gary,
I am delighted that you like this image. It is one of my favorites. It is Half Dome and was taken with a Nikon D200 with a wide angle zoom lens (not sure which one). I moved from Nikon to Olympus a few years ago to shed the heavy equipment. I don't remember how I had set the camera for this shot. I resurrected it this year when a friend wanted shots of Yosemite. I played with it in color and liked it, but when I did a black and white conversion with the clarity turned way up I was even more impressed. The textures and the various elements were dodged and burned in Lightroom to create dimension. The trick to good black and white images is to first get a strong color exposure. Then convert it in lightroom and play with the luminosity sliders and work it.   Posted: 11/09/2021 14:25:28

Lloyd I am very impressed with both shots like everyone else. I wish I had said everything that Tom said first because I agree with everything he said. The photo speaks to me and makes me want to be right there…right now! Great photo!   Posted: 11/15/2021 19:34:26
