SMOOTH SAILING by Jamie Federick

October 2021 - SMOOTH SAILING

About the Image(s)

We had a photo shoot learning how to smooth the water by our settings. Do not have a before photo. It was taken on a tripod at f32, 6 sec. , ISO 100, 51mm

So, you accomplished your goal. The water is definitely smooth. It is interesting what happened to the reflections of the legs of the dock. It is also interesting what happened to the colors in the water under the dock. It more than smoothed out the water, it also affected color and reflections. Neat photo!   Posted: 10/02/2021 12:11:30

I think this is a really nice study of complimenting colors of blue and Vermillion. I like the irregular cloud pattern contrasted with the geometrics of the dock. For me what really sets this image apart from similar ones is the pattern of alternating light and dark layers. I think you added just the perfect subtle foreground elements to anchor your image. In my opinion the addition of just a very slight vignette (maybe as little as -11 in the effects panel of Lightroom) would really make this image pop. As is, you have a beautiful long exposure worthy of it's own place on someone's wall. Nicely done.   Posted: 10/02/2021 15:02:51

Jamis , I really like this image. The only thing I might change is to flip the image so the walkway would come into the image as a leading line then your eyes would not take you right out of the image. Have always read and told that the human eye alway looks at an image fro lower left going right. Just a thought. Like it either way.   Posted: 10/04/2021 07:04:06

Very interesting idea! I guess the scene is so familiar to me that it never occurred to me to flip. Thanks for your creative thinking.   Posted: 10/04/2021 08:30:02

I also really like this one. It is peaceful and relaxing as well as beautiful. It might be nice to have gone even wider angle to get the start of the walkway to more firmly anchor the scene.   Posted: 10/04/2021 12:44:22

I love the colors! Was too busy admiring them to think of anything else. Some of the comments were interesting and gave me something to think about but I love it just the way it is too.   Posted: 10/09/2021 15:39:15

I thought I commented on this a couple of days ago... At any rate, here I am. Love it. Lloyd's flip is the perfect touch to a great image   Posted: 10/09/2021 15:42:19
