FALLS ALONG RIVER WALK by Margaret Sprott, APSA

July 2021 - FALLS ALONG RIVER WALK

About the Image(s)

I took "Falls along River Walk" in 2016 when we were at a PSA conference in San Antonio, TX. I did my usual processing in LR and then used Shadows and Highlights in PS to get what I liked. Of course I had to straighten it and crop it a little.
Have a great visit to NY!

Margaret, I'm having a tough time with this. I just can't seem to put my finger on what is unsettling for me I doo like the waterfalls and your using the rounded framing at the top is a real positive, but overall it's not a WOW for me and I'm not sure why.   Posted: 07/04/2021 20:41:24

Maybe it's just not a WOW picture. For me it brings back good memories but it's probably doesn't look as good as it did in person. We'll see whether others have any ideas about how to make it better.   Posted: 07/04/2021 22:35:55

Margaret, it's a really pretty and peaceful shot. I love the stone arch framing the top. The one thing that hit me was the building and windows. I can see that there was no way to get the shot without them, but they pull me back into a more urban feel.

Maybe I should crop the top off and just show the water falls. It was an urban shot of course but I never thought about just making it a waterfalls shot. Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 07/05/2021 10:50:45

I too like the framing of the arch above the peaceful waterfall and wondered if you could try a sky replacement to remove the buildings behind? I see this is an image you took while at a conference so you wouldn't have had your gear to do a slow shutter. However, I was also wondering if you play with this function on your smart phone? You can do some cool hand held slow shutter stuff.   Posted: 07/05/2021 17:52:47

I never thought about doing a sky replacement. We usually drive to places in the US so we can have all our camera equipment we want. We've made quite a few cross-country trips but have started driving fewer miles/day and nothing at night. I don't know how much longer we'll be able to do this but flying is no longer fun so we may just have to make shorter trips.
Getting rid of the building might make it a better image but I will want to keep it this way too because it will remind me of that very interesting river walk.   Posted: 07/05/2021 21:30:41

Yes, it makes sense that sometimes we take images to record a moment. I totally get that.   Posted: 07/06/2021 18:29:41

Margaret, you are spot on. This is a documentary shot of a fun moment. The framing is nice and it gives you a tool to share the experience with others. Good one.   Posted: 07/05/2021 22:06:18

I agree with Lloyd…it is a documentary of your trip, not a waterfall photo. You could crop down to waterfall but then it could have been anywhere! Great job.   Posted: 07/06/2021 10:27:41
