CACTUS SPIRAL by Lloyd Delaney

About the Image(s)

I took this with my Olympus EM1 Mark III with a 60 mm macro lens. I focus stacked 6 images using the in-camera feature. In Lightroom, I cropped the original image to a square. Next I adjusted the histogram and added texture and some clarity, but it seemed too bright to me. I made a virtual copy and turned it to black and white. I used the tone curve to invert the image making it a black and white negative. I then took the two images as layers to Photo Shop. There I played with different blending modes on the negative and settled on Hard Light at 97% Opacity. This made the image more distinct. I did some cloning to change the look of the upper right corner (it was distracting to me). I brought the image back to Lightroom and used the radial gradient tool to brighten the core of the spiral. It was fun!
I hope I did this correctly.

Lloyd, I love this very interesting photo. I find the layers of texture fascinating. Definitely a very clever perspective on photographing a cactus. You said you lightened the center, which I like, except for the very light spot in the very center. My eyes were constantly being drawn to that spot wondering what is there.   Posted: 06/02/2021 17:44:11

Thanks for your input. I will see what happens if I take that bright spot down a bit.   Posted: 06/02/2021 19:43:19

Very interesting take on a cactus. I do, however, agree with Mary re the center. May I suggest that you include your original when making major changes as it makes it much easier for the reviewer to compare the difference and offer creative suggestions.   Posted: 06/14/2021 20:13:39

I would never have the patience to do such an image but I admire your persistence. I love the circular pattern which somehow is easier to see in the small image that appears when you see all the images in the round at once than when you click on it and it gets bigger. The only thing I think would improve it is if the yellow part were in the center with the same amount of white around the whole yellow center but I'm not sure it would be possible to do that.   Posted: 06/14/2021 21:48:09

Thanks for sharing this image Lloyd. An interesting edit. I want to try some focus stacking soon and I find macro work quite challenging with getting the DOF right. I also find that bit of yellow in the centre to be different from the symmetry of the image.   Posted: 06/15/2021 03:17:32

Lloyd, Love your photo of the cactus. I played with it in my Nik collection Silver Efex Pro to capture it in black and white. Very interesting too.   Posted: 06/15/2021 11:47:52

Yes, it is interesting. Maybe even increase the clarity to emphasize the thorns.   Posted: 06/15/2021 19:20:05
