Original 2

About the Image(s)

The original photo was taken at sunrise on Wellington Beach, my favourite local beach, with my new Samsung GalaxyS24 phone. I’ve found it challenging (to say the least) to change from decades of using iphones to an analog one because it’s mostly non-intuitive to me. BUT … there is an option packaged with the phone to use IA on 10 images per month free.

This month’s image is one of my experiments. Usually the initial result is imperfect, as you can see if you compare the initial conversion with the final one modified in PS. The orange rock was selected and darkened, then highlights brought back using a mask. The orange sea was replaced by inserting a selection of the blue sea at reduced opacity.

I'm very interested to read your thoughts.

Janie, I'm not sure what to say about these images. The original and original 2 don't appear to even be the same image as the final. The colors are better in the original and original 2 than the final which is somewhat flat. The original and original 2 seem to have been shot very slow which I like but the ocean in the final looks as though it was shot much faster also the original and original 2 seem to have a screen over both images if you look close.   Posted: 10/01/2024 17:59:21

This is not what I intended. The photo is titled "Wellington AI". The main image shown above was the original shot I took and I named it "Wellington AI Original".

I wanted to demonstrate that my new phone allows me to try out AI and the main image should be my adapted version of the AI image I named "Wellington AI Final" but it has somehow been changed to Original 2.

The out-of-the-box AI result I adapted in Photoshop I named "Wellington AI Initial" but it has been changed to Original 1. I should have left this step out because it has become confusing.   Posted: 10/03/2024 17:21:57

By the way, AI is Artificial Intelligence. All 3 are the same photo. It's here to stay and readily available on cell phones. I thought I'd like to show you the surprising result of pressing a button. And I wonder what sort of ruling the PSA will need to use to police IA entries in competitions.   Posted: 10/03/2024 22:45:04

Janie, we are in several camera clubs and state photo organizations and AI has been banned in all of them. To me it would be very hard to prove unless an original would be required. Your above image to me I would guess is just a very slow shutter speed and not AI even though it is. The bad thing about AI is that you could produce an image and not even use a camera. Time will tell.   Posted: 10/06/2024 22:34:16

I really like your original image of Wellington Beach. It has a stormy ruggedness to it. Enhance the colors a bit, darken the sky and add some contrast.

The AI images are interesting. They are a bit more graphic than photographic. Like CGI from a movie or video game. So much of the information has been replaced that your original image is lost.

Certainly an interesting experiment with how AI manipulates source images.   Posted: 10/07/2024 17:09:57

Thank you for understanding what I was getting at. I like what you have done with my original image.   Posted: 10/10/2024 21:40:33

I am a bit confused, however I like the Wellington Beach photo shown here. I like what Stewart did to the color too. For some reason, I like water to look like water and not the effect folks get from slow speed. Interesting tests with AI.   Posted: 10/13/2024 18:58:57

Janie, wow, generally speaking. I'm a bit confused by this AI business. I appreciate Tom's and Stewart's comments about his technology.

Having said that, I'm leaning towards the original with the more brightly lit rock outcropping, though Stewart's adjustments also produced a very pleasing image.

I summation: between advancements with smartphoneography and AI we'll be able to just tell the phone what we want and it will happen......

I'm glad you did this, by-the-way!!   Posted: 10/16/2024 15:04:44

Thank you for your comment. I didn't ask for comments on the original photo, I can fix that up myself because I know PS very well. This was my first try at AI and I wanted to share my surprise with all of you. Actually, this AI effect basically did what I might have done in PhotoShop but with the press of a button. The result was a bit clunky and unbelievable but I tried to finesse it. Is it the same difference as going from analog to digital I ask myself. Nothing was actually created by AI, it's still my photo but enhanced like many of us do all the time.   Posted: 10/16/2024 19:45:36
