The Black Church by Albert Zabin

May 2022 - The Black Church

About the Image(s)

Cropped from a wider view with mountains in the back. Seemed too busy so I cropped to a square format and converted in ON1 after increasing saturation in the blue sky

Hi Al, is this from Iceland? I think that you have captured in a very fine way the spirit of the austere simple church that stands alone between earth and sky. I think that the high contrast suits well in the image, and the sky is just impressive. I wonder if slight lightening of the cloud behind the cross might show it more clearly? A very powerful image!   Posted: 05/11/2022 10:36:18

I really like the tonal range on this shot. The image appears very well-exposed with detail throughout. I also really like the processing on the sky. It does seem that church would "feel" better if it were on the other side of the frame so the door would be opening into more space but I suspect that may not have been a choice you had in this setting. Great shot with a very fascinating subject.   Posted: 05/11/2022 10:58:43

I don't think I've ever seen a black church - I wonder what the story behind it is? I like how the wall and the shadow of it balance out the photo. I agree that it might be a good idea to try to show more of the cross - did you dodge/burn that area already? The sky contrast really enhances the photo.   Posted: 05/13/2022 08:51:22

I like this a lot Albert. Your processing gives me the sense of looking at a negative of the image - a good choice for my eye.

It gives me the sense of a refuge in a cold and rather barren area - a place of warmth and shelter. There is also a sense of peace surrounding the church - an uncomplicated scene the takes my mind back to the days when churches were open far more than they are today - places were people could go to get out of the weather, places for quiet reflection.

A great image, thank you so much for sharing it with us.   Posted: 05/20/2022 15:15:29
