Checkerboard Hay by Jeff Manser

January 2022 - Checkerboard Hay

About the Image(s)

Why I took it: Driving through the countryside I was attracted by large rolls of hay (that I learned are called ton bales) that were in so many of the fields. This field looked like a checkerboard to me but there were some distractions in the background. I finally found an angle I could get that showed the checkerboard pattern while minimizing the farm buildings and a tractor in the background. I darkened the sky with the B&W blue slider and lightened the the lighter parts of the field with the yellow and orange sliders.

Hi Jeff! What a great dramatic landscape! I think that the low angle is perfect both for the light and shadows that show the textures, and for the perspective that shows the army of the hay rolls waiting on the field. The contrast between the dark sky and the light tones of the field gives it a fine tension. It feels like a silent menace were hanging over the field - at least a storm rising? I was wondering if the little group of light-toned trees at the left edge might draw the eye a bit off the center? - I think that this might look impressive also in a more panorama-like format?   Posted: 01/14/2022 03:31:46

Thanks for the suggestions Kirsti! I like both modifications. The panorama layout works really well.   Posted: 01/15/2022 11:20:56
