About the Image(s)

This was taken with a Nikon800 and a Nikon 70-300mm, handheld. The editing was done, conversion to B&W was done Silver EFEX and On1 for adjustments. Why black and white? I wanted to emphasize the massiveness of this aninmal as well as the texture of their hides. The original was too busy and the color and birds were disracgtions. The tick birds bills are a vivid red

I like the closer look at the hippos the edited version provides. The detail in hippos really drew me into the image. The slightly darkened background also helps the subjects stand out. I kept wanting to see the bottom hippo's entire snout and wondered if a slightly different crop would work for this shot. A square crop might be able to include the bottom hippo's entire snout plus the entire bird sitting on that hippo.

Hi Al, the mountain-like calm massivity of the beasts really comes through. I think that black and white is an excellent choice - one can almost feel the rough structure of their hides. I agree with Jeff that a square crop might be interesting: it would show whole faces of both the hippos, and sort of an interaction between the two birds facing each other, and you would also get rid of the slightly distracting black patch of shadow at the bottom edge. What do you think?   Posted: 01/14/2022 02:52:16
