Somehow the B&W doesn't quite look like it was made from the color version you labeled as original. In the color there is a hint of a smile that makes the portrait a little more lively. Technically, the photograph is excellent. The wrinkles are more prominent than in the color. Personally, I think I like it better with the wrinkles not quite so harsh.   Posted: 10/12/2021 17:05:21

Hi Adrian! What an interesting face! I think that you have made the most of the hard lighting that makes him/her squint against the bright sunshine. I think the the harsh wrinkles work very well as a contrasting structure to the sharply defined knit of the cap and the velvet of the collar.   Posted: 10/14/2021 14:15:35

Adrian, the details in this portrait are incredible. You have caught the humor in her eyes. Would be fun to hear the stories she could tell. What lens did you use to capture this portrait?   Posted: 10/18/2021 17:46:55

Hi Jen. For some reason, my narrative sent to Albert didn't get uploaded. It was…..
Character from Xian

This was taken in 2017 during a 28 tour of the key cities of China - this one from a city I loved Xian (the old part with a vast old wall round is very interesting).

Settings using Olympus gear - 150mm (so FF 300) 1/1000, f2.8 ISO200.

This seemed an obvious one for mono, so after cropping I worked on emphasising her features, brightening her eyes and dulling down bright parts of the background - all in Lightroom. A final push through Topaz A1 Sharpen.   Posted: 10/19/2021 00:56:47

Hi Adrian. This is, to my eye, a powerful portrait that tells me a story of age, wisdom, work, a hard life, and the passing of time and the effects of all of them on our faces. I also like the expression that seems a little bit like he or she is thinking of something that causes them some happiness.

My only regret is that we cannot see more of his or her eyes. Perhaps some work to brighten what we can see of their eyes …?

I will be sorry to see you go. I have enjoyed your images. Safe travels and god speed my friend. Perhaps some day we can meet somewhere - who knows.   Posted: 10/25/2021 14:36:39
