About the Image(s)

his was taken in (obviously) Yosemite in February 2014 on our only poor weather day (ie: good photographically!) and early in the morning after a snowy night. Settings on my then Canon gear (5D mkiii) with 24-104 f4 lens - 1/80 f9.0 ISO100 tripod.

Mono conversion has been tinkered with over the months in an attempt to add drama, while controlling the highlights.

Many thanks for suggestions on my last month’s image - gratefully received!

I didn't know there could be a new original photo of this location, but you made one. It needs an important frame.   Posted: 06/14/2021 15:04:02

It is wild and majestetic and wonderful. I was wondering how just slightly less contrast, like in the original, would work for the snow/clouds among the trees?   Posted: 06/15/2021 16:25:26

Absolutely love this composition, it may be because its on line but it looks like the highlights are blown can you pull back a bit of detail.   Posted: 06/16/2021 06:24:45

Adrian, the clouds make this image for me. As Albert says it is very hard to capture a different take of the scene. Well done   Posted: 06/21/2021 21:41:33

Hi Adrian. This image presented me with a wonderful puzzle. As I see it the conversion to mono could not have been done better. The drama of the clouds added to the image even more. It is a fascinating image I could study for hours and I expect I would find more in it.

The puzzle for me is which I like better the original in color or the monochrome version - I do not have an answer for that question. Both are wonderful. Perhaps if you were to submit one or both the the authorities in Yosemite they would be willing to purchase the rights to use them in their literature - to my eye both are that good.

Thank you very much for sharing both with us.   Posted: 06/22/2021 19:37:41

Many thanks Ed. There were though many tripods that morning with their owners so grateful for the wonderful conditions! Timing and luck plays a large part in what we do!   Posted: 06/23/2021 02:32:59

Monochrome for landscape photos where you have a combination of mountains and cloud works really well and it has made justice for this photo too.

I do have 2 suggestions which in my perspective will make this look event better, but again that's how I see this image.
- Reduction the highlights/brightness of the clouds in the foreground which will make the waterfall more clearly visible, as I feel it is a bit lost in the brightness of the clouds.
- If I look at the color photo, the trees in the foreground are really creating the frame into the frame , you may want to add it in your monochrome and see if it pleases you.

Overall a very beautiful image Adrian and thanks for sharing   Posted: 06/24/2021 07:42:46
