901 Simonton Street, Key West by Tom Buckard

November 2021 - 901 Simonton Street, Key West

About the Image(s)

This image is of an old residence in Key West that has a huge colorful Bougainvillea growing out front. The contrast from the colorful flowers and the old weathered wood is extrodinary. This image is nine images processed with Aurora HDR. Then converted it to monocrome in photoshop and then I erased to show the colorful items. Had to be cropped tight as there were ugly buildings on both sides.

Shot with a Nikon D800 with a Nikkor 28-300 lens. Focal length was 116 and the F stop was 3.5. Tripod was used. 9 images HDR.

Tom, this is a really nice juxtaposition of BW and color. Each gives the photo a wonderful expression of the age of the building and the age of the Bougainvillea. The house with blue doors and the color in the upstairs window make the house stand out. In addition, the clouds assist in giving the photo an overall look of complete. Nicely Done!   Posted: 11/07/2021 17:15:09

Richard, thank you for the kind words. This image was a lot of work in Aurora HDR then photoshop but surprisingly it has not done well in competitions. Maybe a few more tweaks and I will try it again.   Posted: 11/07/2021 18:14:42

Well done, Tom. As Richard said, the house really stands out. I would suggest increasing the white level in the house to brighten up the lightest parts and increase the overall contrast of the monochrome portion of the image slightly. Perhaps also, remove the color from the foliage on the right hand edge of the image (this I'm not sure about, however.)   Posted: 11/09/2021 09:53:08

Don, I will keep trying. Like I said this has not done well in competition. I like all of your suggestions and will definitely try them. Looking at the foliage on the right, they are distracting. Thank you so much.   Posted: 11/09/2021 19:53:35

I recognize all the work that went into this image, with good results. As Don has mentioned, the monochrome portion could use some contrast.   Posted: 11/11/2021 04:11:43
