About the Image(s)

Image taken at the small fishing village of Mayport, FL. minutes before dusk with a large storm passing just to the north.

Gull removed from all images then replaced after processing with Aurora HDR. 3 shot HDR. Slightly grunge but not far off from how I remembered it actually looked.

Equipment info - Nikon D850, F6.3, ISO-1250, Focal length 29, Lens Nikkor 24-70 F/2.8

The blend looks nice and smooth. There seems to be a little of the sky coming through on the gull's tail, so maybe check that mask. It looks to have a little of an Orton style glow to it, and that is the one thing that seems a bit at odds with the subject to me.   Posted: 08/13/2022 21:51:43

Rick, now that you mention it way back with film, I used to go after the Orton effect but now I just consider it to be a little painterly. Always fun to experiment!
Rick, I had to laugh, near the seagull is a spot! I thought wow have a spot on my sensor then I realized my wife was next to me throwing crackers into the air to attract the seagulls!   Posted: 08/15/2022 16:12:30

Overall the blend looks good but as you said, a little bit on the grunge side. That probably accounts for the bright green bushes on the right. The seagull really adds to the scene and is almost 3D.   Posted: 08/24/2022 12:27:05

Tom, Our decisions normally point towards what we want. Different photographers may want a soft-like grunge effect and it can be effective. There are times I may want this too.

You have a good subject with the boat in the water with storm clouds in the background. Your wife did you a service keeping the Seagall in the scene by throwing out food for it to grab. And, it turned out quite sharp. The dock leading to the boat has a strong shadow and could possibly be lightened with the shadow-highlight adjustment.

This scene tells a story and has interest along with composition and color. Nice workl.   Posted: 08/24/2022 12:44:39

I actually like the dreamy grunge look. It enhances the scene. That was a great idea removing the gull and replacing it. I'd even add a couple more. You also might consider a crop off the bottom. Overall, I like the image.   Posted: 08/25/2022 16:39:53

I like the dreamy orton effect. I would crop a little off the bottom and fix the tail feathers of the birds to make it stronger.   Posted: 08/27/2022 04:25:39
