Sun Valleys Bald Mountain Spring by Max Burke, APSA

November 2021 - Sun Valleys Bald Mountain Spring

About the Image(s)

This image was taken of Bald Mountain, Sun Valleys' famous and first American major ski mountain with chair lifts. I have skied it countless times. It has runs that go roughly two miles from top to bottom. Regardless, I captured this image on May 15, 2019, while there was still snow, so some lifts are easily identified in this image. This picture has five images with 1-stop differences processed by Photomatrix Pro 6. Phone and power lines were removed plus golf course markers and a pile of light-colored rocks from some construction. Additionally, small adjustments were made using ACR. The Nikon 750 with a Nikon 24-120 f4 lens was used without the aid of a tripod. The 5 images were one-stop with speeds ranging from 1/125 to 1/1000 seconds with a 52mm setting. Other settings were an f/11 lens opening with an ISO 200 setting. My objective was to bring out the clarity and beauty of this mountain, in which I was a lookout for the USFS years ago.

Dramatic with a nice punch from the contrast. I feel it holds together well and the blend looks good. The only point I might take a second look at is the two trails at the very top of the mountain where the darkening on the sky looks to have crossed over onto the two trials. It may just be the shadowing was that heavy, but something along the lines of the other ski trails to the left would keep the general luminosity more uniform.   Posted: 11/03/2021 13:23:39

Very nice image and the darker ominous sky adds nice contrast to the mountain the gold course in front. Possibly tone down the green a little, might not be so vibrant during a cloudy day. Other than that, well done.   Posted: 11/16/2021 09:43:26
