Driftwood Beach Sunrise by Brad Ashbrook

November 2021 - Driftwood Beach Sunrise

About the Image(s)

This was photographed the week after Labor Day this year while camping in Jekyll Island Georgia. The Driftwood Beach was only a half mile from the campground and went out for sunrise one morning. Barely saw the sun for a couple of seconds but it did provide a little color. This is a 3 shot blend based on a +1, 0, -1 around 6secs, f11 at ISO 100 at 20mm with my Sony a7R4. Did the original process with Aurora 2018 (tripod shot) and brought it into Photoshop CC. After some cleanup for spots, I used a luminosity mask to highlight the sunrise through the clouds. Then worked with the overall color within CC and Nik Color Efex Pro.

The blend looks fine and natural. On my monitor the overall image looks on the dull side. I'm guessing the majority of the tones are in the light mid tones and highlights so it may be tough to arrive at an effective contrast differential between the two. I tried using two gradients to add a little more in.   Posted: 11/03/2021 12:44:45

Good sky and excellent wave created tree trunk and branches with one pointing back to the photographer. Both make this image work.   Posted: 11/15/2021 17:42:40
