July 2021 - Pittsburgh At Night 2017

About the Image(s)

This month’s image is from the 2017 Convention in Pittsburgh. The shot is made from the overlook with a Canon 1D MK IV, 24-105 L lens at 47mm, F16 and iso 800. The bracket was five shots with +/- 2 at one stop intervals around a base exposure time of 25 sec with a + .67 stop compensation. Having run into chromatic aberration issues with Aurora and having a lot of high contrast edges, I opted to process the raw images using DxO’s new Pure Raw and then run it through Photomatix 6.2 for the blend. Clean up was minimal (other than removing enough dust spots to make one shudder). I did use the darkest layer to blend in the fountain, magenta antenna, and one building top where I felt the blend had let things bloom too much. At long exposures like this that type of spread is going to be there with any stronger light source.

Beyond beautiful. The lighting, the composition; and, even the sky cooperated. Love it.   Posted: 07/07/2021 09:21:18

I love this. Wow, great impact and wonderful dynamic range. I especially think that the water streaks add a lot to it.

The only things to improve are nit-picky -- I cloned out the green highway signs and toned down the bright pink tower   Posted: 07/07/2021 14:22:19

I like it, a very nice view of the city.
The blend looks very natural and nice tweaks by Lisa.
The only part that bothers me a smidgen is the green road at the bottom.   Posted: 07/19/2021 11:04:23

This is beautifully done and your explanation explains what you did to make this one show so well. I love the lighting, sky, and river all blended to look nice and smooth. The reflection in the river is amazing.   Posted: 07/20/2021 21:36:48
