Reddish Egret by Bruce Michelotti

June 2022 - Reddish Egret

About the Image(s)

This is a Reddish Egret who is fishing in the shallow waters at Ft. De Soto. This Egret hunts by shading the area with its wings which either lures the fish to the shade or perhaps startles them. It will chase its prey around the area and puts on quite a show while fishing. This shot was taken in the morning using a Canon 7D MII with an ISO of 250 at 1/1000 and f/8.

This has a key element that you may or may not be aware of. An artist friend of mine in Pittsburgh explained it to me. "Gravity". Looking at this I can just "feel" the Egret lifting up. Exposure and focus spot on! Good Crop. Eye is very attention getting. The reflection is good!   Posted: 06/05/2022 11:43:12

Thanks Mark. I was not aware of the element Gravity, but I get it now that you have explained it. Just goes to show that sometimes we like something and can't really explain exactly why. That is why this group is so great, lots of expertise about many aspects of art and photography.   Posted: 06/07/2022 09:06:55

Thanks Linda, this is the first one I ever saw. I watched him fish for about 15 minutes. What a show--dancing, chasing the fish and popping those wings up to create shade. For a moment I thought I was watching a Nat Geo movie:)   Posted: 06/07/2022 09:10:40

Very sharp image of the bird and you have captured the beautiful moment successfully. The compostion is also good. If the reflection can see the bird vaguely, it will be perfect! Good job!   Posted: 06/08/2022 21:41:05

Great image Bruce, The head and eye are also perfectly framed by the wing. I think the reflection is just right because it shows movement in the water and thus of the bird. Another great shot. Thanks Mark for the concept of Gravity of which I was unaware.   Posted: 06/18/2022 13:51:53

Nice work, Bruce. I really like the image by itself, but your explanation really makes me feel like I'm a part of the story. The detail in the feathers and the sharpness of the eye are impressive. I also like the contrast of the softness of the ripples in the water. They seem to complement each other. The color palette really gives the egret a sense of place with the surroundings. Great work!   Posted: 06/29/2022 22:39:34
