During a street photography workshop in Seattle, our instructor led us to an overpass to experiment with nighttime photography and capturing traffic in motion??”something I had always wanted to learn. We arrived about an hour before sunset to set up, ensuring we were ready as the light changed. As dusk fell, we took a series of shots at different exposure times, refining our technique with each attempt. Our goal was to capture the perfect image during the blue hour, when the city lights and fading daylight create a striking contrast.

A great idea Bunny but I think this image says this technique needs more practice. Maybe politics has me irritated but here goes. I think the buildings are underexposed and traffic is too bright and too much on the bottom. It is not the main focus as you say the instructor directed and I do not think on the overpass. I also want to do a moving traffic time exposure. I never have and it looks like getting the right exposure would be rather difficult   Posted: 03/10/2025 11:28:22

Thanks for your comments Harley. We also did a photoshoot of Seattle from across the Puget Sound. Both shots require taking many shots.   Posted: 03/24/2025 16:33:11

A nice city shot Bunny. The moving cars, as streaks of white and red frame your city buildings well. You have captured great color in the sky going from deep blue/purple at the top to "sunset red" at the bottom. It is a beautiful gradient background to your shot. You did capture some nice lighting in a few of the buildings showing us end of day in the city. I think, though, that you might want to open up the shadows on the building just a touch. That would let us see more detail in the buildings themselves and also might allow some of the interior lights to glow brighter. Nice first try on this technique.

Thanks for your comments Bruce. I agree about the shadows. I do think something got lost in the downsampling because in LightRoom, I see much more detail than what is showing here. I will work on the shadows because most people these days view images in a web browser and that's the endpoint I need to aim for.   Posted: 03/24/2025 16:38:42

I think you needed a longer exposure, 15 sec. didn't get the job done. The composition is good.   Posted: 03/23/2025 13:35:36

I also like the composition and the idea, and agree you could have had more light. You shot at f/22, but could have shot at f/4 because everything is distant and you do not need any depth of field.
Another question. Our son lives in Seattle near that location. Did you shoot from the 12th Ave. bridge?   Posted: 03/25/2025 21:23:12
