Border and Customs Patrol by Bruce Michelotti

October 2024 - Border and Customs Patrol

About the Image(s)

This photo was shot at the air show I recently attended. This was a presentation by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. They were showing us how they can jump into any area to "take care of business". Armed agents and tracking dogs are lowered from the helicopter to the land. Quite interesting, it was almost like watching a TV show.
Canon R5 with 100-400 at 400. 1/250, f/8 and ISO of 250.
Processed in Lightroom and then in Silver Effects Pro to convert to mono with sepia tone. I thought the sepia tone gave the image a gritty look that seemed right for the photo. What do you think?

Great job Bruce, The dog being dropped seems the Piece de resistance. Framing wonderful with great tones. Propellers are also just right, showing motion but not totally blurred. Nice job Bruce. Life Magazine folded in 2007 I hear gut there may be a website.. This photo would be a fit !   Posted: 10/17/2024 20:11:06

Thanks Harley, the dog is what really caught my attention. He appeared to like the jump.   Posted: 10/18/2024 14:54:24

Great job Bruce. You have captured the right moment of Border and Customs Patrol. The photo can enter into Photojournalism competition and win an award. I would not change a thing!   Posted: 10/18/2024 03:02:11

Sepia gives this image a completely different "feel". The "almost" stopped roters add motion and resistence to gravity. The dog being in the shot is just perfect. This would be a great photojournalism entry. There seems to be a little distortion on the left on either side of the agent on the ground. My eye caught it and I am sure it can be easily fixed.   Posted: 10/27/2024 19:20:33

Thanks for your comment Mark. The Sepia really changed the look of the image for the better. AS for the distortion on the left, that is wash from the helicopter engine. I considered removing it, but in the end let it stay as it is part of the story.   Posted: 10/28/2024 13:15:04

Hi Bruce,
The sepia helps tell the story. Great choice. I love the sharpness of the helicopter along with the softness of the blades that show motion. I can't suggest anything to make it better!   Posted: 10/28/2024 09:33:10
