Brood X by Robert Schleif

October 2021 - Brood X

About the Image(s)

Here is one of the billions of Brood X cicadas which we in the Mid-Atlantic had the "pleasure" of seeing and hearing for all of June. This focus stacked image was taken with a Canon R5 using a 70-200 f/4 telephoto with the Canon 500 D closeup lens (no longer being sold). The stack composite was made with the Canon DPP 4 program although I have now gone to Helicon focus as it is considerably faster and produces slightly sharper images. The composite stack was then further processed in Picture Window Pro 8.

The detail is amazing. With focus stacking I am wondering why the right eye is not sharp. Is it motion blur. It is still a great photo.   Posted: 10/02/2021 16:15:59

As Michael said, the detail is amazing. The color of the brood X and sharpness is amazing. What is the size of the bug and how close to it were you. Great image   Posted: 10/03/2021 15:20:31

I don't know why the right eye is not sharp. I've looked at all the images in the focus stack, and none are more sharp than the composite. Possibly it is just the angle at which we are seeing the eye? I reprocessed the focus stack using Helicon. It did do a better job on the edges of the eye, but the compound structure of the eye is not visible, just like the image that I posted. The cicada was about an inch and a half long and it was about 16 inches from the front of my lens. Here is the original focus stack. As you can see, what I posted is only a small fraction of the original image.   Posted: 10/03/2021 18:11:50

You did a great job with the picture and your crop of the Brood X.   Posted: 10/09/2021 14:27:30

The image is nice and sharp. Yes, the right eye could be sharper but it is an awesome image. I was in MD when they came out. Very noisy.   Posted: 10/11/2021 10:16:30

Very impactful. He definitely fills the frame. Colors are bold and detail is super. Yes, wonder about the sharpness of the eye. Very nice image.   Posted: 10/18/2021 11:43:26

Excellent crop. The position of the cicada makes it look as if he is looking right at us. Great color and detail. I was in NM once when they were out. The sound just about drove me crazy!   Posted: 10/18/2021 20:04:38
