About the Image(s)

I made this photograph at the Rose City Airfest on Friday, 02 July 2021. Air Force paratroopers presented the United States and Texas flags at the beginning of the air show. My wife and I had reserved seats near the taxiway where the pilots taxied following their performance. The seats were very helpful while we ate lunch, but I stood to make more than 1100 photographs.

I made this photograph with my Nikon D750 and Sigma DG 150-500 1:5-6.3 APO HSM lens. My camera was set for low-speed continuous shooting while handheld. Aperture was f/16; shutter speed was 1/320 second; ISO was 400, and focal length was 500 mm. Post processing was done in Luminar 4. I used the Dodge & Burn tool to lighten the paratrooper's face.

With hindsight, I should have used settings that gave me a shutter speed of 1/500 second or faster. For aircraft in flight, I changed the shutter speed to 1/1600 and 1/2000 second. This was our first time to attend an air show; so it was a learning experience.

I did not crop because I felt like the paratrooper needed open space around him.

Maybe I should have used my tripod with the gimbal head, but it would not have given me the range of movement that I went through with my camera and lens handheld. Besides, carrying my tripod on the shuttle bus between the parking area and the airfest would have been difficult.

Hi Keith,
I like the shot. sharp and in a nice clear sky. The jumper must have been a good distant away, as you were using a 500mm lens. The only suggestion, I feel you just have more sky, than needed. I cropped the image, which brings it closer.   Posted: 07/08/2021 11:58:16

Keith, Very nice shot. I would remove the spots on the right side of the photo. or crop as Stuart suggested to get rid of that area.   Posted: 07/08/2021 15:33:52

Yes the spots need to be erased. My first thought was that they were birds. Thank you.   Posted: 07/30/2021 01:23:34

It is an interesting picture. Instead of cropping from the left and right as Stuart suggests, I'd crop a little from the bottom and add a little more space at the top.   Posted: 07/11/2021 14:50:37

I need to revisit the cropping. Thank you.   Posted: 07/30/2021 01:24:58

I like the idea of adding a bit more space to the top as Robert suggested. At the same time you could crop some from the bottom and some from the sides. I also agree with Sarita about removing the spots on the right side if you decide not to crop. Fun photo.   Posted: 07/11/2021 18:00:36
