About the Image(s)

This image was taken about 2 weeks ago at the Palm Beach County Fair. Walking through one of the large buildings, before going out for the normal County fairs. (rides, food, entertainment etc.) we came upon this sand castles. It was put together with gray colored sand. The image was taken in color, but when I looked at it, I decided that Black & White would be a better choice. I first straightened out the image, then cropped it. As the background ,behind the Sand castle was a cinder block wall. I removed all of the cement lines, between each block, that was showing. Then I put the image through Photoshop and Topaz.
The camera I used was a Panasonic FZ-200 mirrorless Camera, with a 2.8 Leica lens. The settings were: f/2.8 ; 1/60sec. at ISO 250

Generally, I like B & W to be pretty contrasty, but when I upped the contrast on this, it looked less like sand and a bit artifical. This is an interesting subject that made me look and think. I think I'd like a little more contrast, but the amount depends on the taste and intentions of the photographer.   Posted: 07/02/2021 16:00:42

Thanks for your comment, usually the sand is a light brown. It looks like it came from the beach at the ocean. Most of the sand from the waters edge looks this color. It had to be trucked in and dumped on the building floor, so that they could build it on the convention floor. Most of the sand castles are put together outside in open air, The Florida Sun dries it out fast, and looks like the regular beach sand.   Posted: 07/04/2021 15:27:15

Just added a bit more contrast by playing with various Topaz filters   Posted: 07/04/2021 16:14:57

This is good. The increased contrast helps and it still feels like sand to me.   Posted: 07/04/2021 19:13:39

What an amazing art work and you captured it well. I like what Bev did to the image. I think the increased contrast gives the image more depth.   Posted: 07/08/2021 15:26:07

I agree that the added contrast makes it look more 3-dimensional due to the seemingly greater depth of field. This is a fascinating photograph.   Posted: 07/30/2021 01:48:13

The sand castle is very interesting. I like all of the detail and the repetition of the fish and especially their eyes. I agree with Sarita that you captured it well. I also like the extra contrast Bev added. It is very fun to look at and enjoy. I could see it as a promotional poster for the event.   Posted: 07/11/2021 18:34:49

Well done. Fairs are typically very chaotic making it difficult to photograph something like this. I can't tell the actual size of this sand castle, but I expect it was a challenge to get into the field of view of your camera.   Posted: 07/30/2021 01:52:41
