About the Image(s)

“Engrossed in Reading” was created from a challenge that a friend and I set each other to see how
we interpret a person on bench seat facing the ocean. For me, being beside the ocean is a relaxing
experience. My idea was that reading some books with the fresh ocean air, the sound of birds and
time just drifts away. Little birds come and go unnoticed. Almost as if time stood still.

Hi Nadia,
Welcome to Group 41! Hope you are enjoying your summer down under while we survive our winter. I really like your composite. It is a fun interpretation that is well put together. I would like to learn how to do the sky treatment that you did here. Do you recommend any training videos or websites? I have some minor nits, but that is why you are here. The book on the grass looks pasted on and needs a bit more work. The hat and the scarf on the bench are so dark that I had to look at the original to see what they were. I enjoyed the clock and the flying books as they do convey the passage of time while reading. Well done.   Posted: 01/03/2022 10:31:59

Hi Tom:
Thanks for the welcome and feedback, I look forward to being part of the group. The sky is a combination of a few images that I've blended together. Hope this tutorial which gives an overview of how to blend skies helps. I take your point about the book on the grass, it could be distorted a bit more. The added vignette has darkened the scarf and hat and I am probably hesitant to remove it.

Great tutorial, thanks. You could mask the vignette to open up the shadows on the scarf and hat, but it's great in any case.   Posted: 01/05/2022 08:31:47

Hi Nadia,
What a delightful image. I enjoy the tonality and the watercolour like patterned sky. I wonder whether the book on the grass could use some shadow between the open folds of pages and on the ground. All elements come together well.   Posted: 01/04/2022 15:37:47

Hi Susan,
Thanks for your feedback and agree that the book on the ground needs more work.   Posted: 01/05/2022 03:31:26

Nadia, This is an outstanding composition which is successful on many levels. I love the atmosphere created by the sky and hues chosen. I agree with Tom regarding the book on the ground and wonder if you just eliminated that book (and I might consider removing the blue bird too)as that might focus the image more in the upper third where you want the viewer to look.   Posted: 01/08/2022 13:40:41

Welcome to the group Nadia!

I love the image and concert that it portrays!
I have always done things like create a story to go with a person, since I was a teenager sitting on the porch of the local store for hours on end to get out of the house.

The image has a lot of impact!

Most of the elements are well placed and blended.

The clock really wows me, but the center seems too bright. Our eye is drawn to the brightest parts, which is the sky and the area next to the man.
The bright bird in the middle seems to take away from the man in contemplation.   Posted: 01/18/2022 22:18:49
