About the Image(s)

What do you think?

We were near Knaub, Utah last December. We went to Coral Pink Sand Dunes which features uniquely pink hued sand dunes. I wasn't sure I liked the way my original was not as pink as it was in true life. I tried B and W and got a whole different image. Which do you prefer?

Hey Jamie, this is one of my favorite places. I was there shooting travel pictures for AAA. Your are right, the original did not capture, as far as I remember, the Pink color of the dunes. I like the color shot better. The sand in the B&W looks like a lot of noise. It's a great shot. Too bad there are no foot prints (just kidding). I really like your composition and it makes me want to go back and shoot some more. By the way the Dunes had snow on them when I was there. If you have a chance to go back, do it after a storm. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 05/06/2022 11:09:45

Thanks Don! It is a great place and one that is not well visited! I'm glad we went. I saw pictures with snow on the dunes, but not there for us (and we were there in December).   Posted: 05/17/2022 14:41:57

We visited Utah in 1991 but time limited us to Bryce and Zion canyons. The Coral Pink Sand Dunes looks an nice venue and you have an interesting capture. You don't share your metadata but the image looks a bit soft to me - did you use a tripod?
Overall, I think adding a bit of vibrancy and contrast would help. I agree the mono version could be water, sand or snow. I think I prefer the colour original.   Posted: 05/07/2022 05:03:26

Thanks Andrew! I used my iPhone for this shot.

I hope you can return to this little find!   Posted: 05/17/2022 14:43:22

Hi Jaimie, I think the colour version has more interest as there doesn't seem to be a lot of contrast in the BW version. Both images look a bit noisy and would really benefit by a reduction there. I'm alway in awe of the patterns Mother Nature is able to provide in sand.   Posted: 05/14/2022 20:29:38

Thank you. After returning to visit this shot, I agree, color is better. It was a quick shot with my phone.   Posted: 05/17/2022 14:44:37

I like the more abstract B&W version. I would bring up the contrast more and play a little more with the hues in the cool and warm directions to see what you could bring out.   Posted: 05/23/2022 09:34:07
