About the Image(s)

I took this image in 2015 at a Georgia motocross track. There was a huge jump on part of the track and I was able to lie close the jumping motocross drivers. The camera settings were ISO 250, @ 175mm, f14, 1/1600 sec. It was kind of fun to try a genre that I wouldn't normally photograph even though I love sports. It would be good to get some feedback. Should I have tried a larger aperture to blur the background more?

A wonderful sharp, well exposed action shot

Beautifully positioned - well caught. Good to see the eyes behind the helmet too Even at 1/1600 there is slight blur on the back wheel though which detracts a little bit. This image probably would do well in monochrome as well - worth a try anyway.   Posted: 06/15/2021 09:01:12

Thank you Andrew. I will see what this looks like in monotone.   Posted: 06/15/2021 12:53:44

An amazing shot. You are brave to lie so close under them!
I don't mind the blur on the tires: it tells me the tires are spinning.
What bothers me is the tree line behind the rear tire. I'm wondering if at least that part of the tree line could be cloned out, so that it appears there is only sky behind him.   Posted: 06/16/2021 03:21:58

I wasn't sure if the trees gave some scale relationship to the overall image. He was flying very high! It was a fun exercise practicing shutter speeds and spot focusing. I think sports photography would be great fun, it is just that those huge lenses are so $$$$.   Posted: 06/16/2021 12:26:20

Hi Anne, I don't mind the blurry wheel or the trees in the background. I think they add to the story. I love the fact that we can see his eyes and where he is looking to. Well done. I also like the very colourful image, but wonder if the blue sky is just a little too blue.   Posted: 06/17/2021 02:03:32

I know nothing about motocross racing, but this image gives me the feeling I am there. I can just hear the bike, feel the power and know where I'm headed by looking at the biker's face. You look like you are right underneath and my hands sweat just thinking about how brave you were!!! Well done!   Posted: 06/17/2021 14:36:37

Great air time Anne! I like the cropping and the simplicity of just the rider, some blue sky and cloud in the background along with the trees. And I like your low angle from the ground looking up at the rider passing over head. I'm glad the rider didn't land on you.

How about trying some variations such as shooting shutter priority and then a series of shots varying the speed from 1/2 second up to the 1/1600 you used. That way you could have more action indicating blur in the wheels. And you could be panning also. That would blur the background, another tel (indication) of motion and action. The result will be mostly deletes but some of the images will have the wheels spinning and perhaps the clouds stretching out. Then you can see which variation you like best.
