August 2022 - Left in the Corner

About the Image(s)

Sony A550 – Minolta 17-35 2.8 17mm ISO200 15 seconds F14

Converted to monochrome in Silver Efex Pro and some gentle adjustment in PS by removing a horrible eyesore on the left.

Whilst wondering around a large house where photography was not allowed, I found a nice box and my car keys to rest the camera and with no one around on 10 second timer got this shot. Quite pleased with it. Don’t tell the owners.

Subjects which cry to be in B&W.
I appreciate the gradient of light (from left to right).
A place with a story that has to be fixed on a picture. Fast & wel done.   Posted: 08/02/2022 03:50:40

Paul, I think you have composed this well, for a pre-set still life. The composition works and by getting rid of an annoyance you allow the eye to be led to where you want it with the greatest contrast of light and dark around the basket with the bunch of grass pointing toward it. There are good leading lines from the supports on the shelf to the upright on the scooter. Lots of lovely repetition of the wooden boards. I find this well exposed and with good details. I think a slight more dark under the bright basket may ground it better. By which I mean make it to seem less like it floats on the floor. Well done.   Posted: 08/02/2022 18:21:34

Paul, I truly like this image. Old rustic images lend themselves to B & W. I love the tones and the textures. There is something disconcerting about the basket, however. I'm not sure what it is. It appears to be floating in front of the scene, without contributing much to the scene. How would it look without it at all? Or is that another photo?   Posted: 08/13/2022 12:18:17

This has great DOF even with subjects with little depth. The basket stands out and draws attention as it is we'll lit, then on to the hanging dried plants followed by the scooter. It is interesting that each object tends to have its own lighting and tones, probably why the feeling of depth. The DOF makes it feel like I am standing right there.

I wonder if darkening the wood background on the left would give it more balance. It is a large area and bright compared to the rest of the image and tends to pull the eye.   Posted: 08/16/2022 15:58:25

Paul, you really pulled this one off. The tonality from the bright whites on the basket to the other subtle shades go grey and black work so well. I love the dried plants and the wonderful old time scooter that looks like it would still work.

You could not have arranged this natural still life any better than you found this gem.
I wish this was my photo.

Speaking of Scooters. It is now a big deal with electric scooters for adults buzzing around our home street. They even have lights for night reading. Folks even carry them on to computer trains so they have a mean of transportation at the end of the train ride.   Posted: 08/22/2022 16:56:26
