About the Image(s)

This photo was taken in 2016 at the Sculpted in Steel exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. It is a Stout Scarab from 1932, the very first minivan. It was shot on a Canon 6D using a Sigma 50mm f-1.4 lens at f/10. ISO was 1600 and the shutter speed was 1/40. The image was cropped in Lr and initially converted to mono in SEP2 then opened in Ps to tweek. The mirror and background were removed and contrast increased with selective burning and dodging.

This has great lighting in both the shadows and highlights with no loss of detail in either. The shapes, curves and lines all work together to make a strong impact image. The close crop and elimination of the distracting background works very well.

I would only recommend a thin stroke to separate the image from the background.   Posted: 06/01/2021 13:21:16

Oops. You're right about the thin stroke. I still look at everything as a print and don't think about the images being displayed on a black background.   Posted: 06/01/2021 20:52:15

Very nice Steve. I like the tone control here and the design aspect. The bold composition and impact and punch and engrosses the viewer. Yes the stroke at edge was required. Good light to you Steve.   Posted: 06/02/2021 12:34:23

Wow! Your great tonality and excellent cropping works. I love the quality of dodging to get the back window to shine through so well.
This is a keeper. Jerry   Posted: 06/03/2021 09:00:15

I love the angle you have chosen to shot this, it uses the lines of the car well. The relationship of the front architecture and the back windows works so well. With the tones and lighting this is one of those images that will look good in a black frame with and white border on the wall. So I had a go at representing that.   Posted: 06/10/2021 08:14:53

I was immediately impressed by the great tonality. The treatment and the format are well chosen.
There is a difference of light on the top (roof) of the car, between the left and right side. It can disturb or it brings a gradient of light from the left to the right. I would choose the second proposition.   Posted: 06/16/2021 04:53:43
