Farmers Hat by Steve Knight

May 2021 - Farmers Hat

About the Image(s)

This image was taken once again at the Sauer/Beckman Historic Farm in Stonewall, Texas. This was a hat sitting on a table in the dogrun of the main cabin (for those not familiar with the term, a dogrun is an exterior corridor separating two halves of a home allowing for flow through ventilation). This image was taken with a Leica Monochrome mounted with a Voightlander Nocton 50mm f/1.5 set at F/2. As there was a steady stream of traffic walking on the wooden floor of the building I wound up having to set the ISO to 3200 so I could get a 1/1000 second shutter speed to negate any vibration. I did a bit of touch-up in Ps to remove some distracting elements but elected to leave the line pointing to the hat because, well, it was pointing to the hat. I painted some texture to the hat in Lightroom and added a bit of contrast as well. Otherwise it is as shot.

Very cool, I like the exploding light upper left and the light rays leading from the hat to the right. It makes the hat really stand out. It is a simplistic image yet it has great interest and impact.   Posted: 05/07/2021 09:27:50

Steve, with a camera like what you have, B/W is it. The exploding highlight in the upper left corner and the wonderful shadow unger the hat make this a very strong image. Nice texture. The centering of the hat from top to bottom does not bother me at all. Would love to see other images of your trip to the Historic farm. Do you have a website? Jerry   Posted: 05/09/2021 10:16:32

I do Jerry. It's steveknightphotography.com. I haven't updated it in a while but there are several images of the Sauer/Beckman farm there. Thanks for asking.
I'm glad you mentioned the shadow under the hat. I really like that shadow as it's almost as it the hat is sitting atop a head.   Posted: 05/09/2021 13:15:50

Nice camera set-up. Great idea for an image that nearly comes off but I just hate that thing in the background that for me does not add to the image. The focus on the knot of the hat is just right. Simple image with a lot of power.   Posted: 05/17/2021 02:53:43

A very simple image that is not really so simple - I looked at it quite a while before I read your description. I think that without anything for comparison it is difficult to know the size of the subject, at least until you look closely. Is it a hat or something made to look like a hat? Strong work!   Posted: 05/18/2021 09:27:07

Beautiful picture of a simple subject. Well done.
The strong light (upper left) and the ray (upper right) bring a lot at the picture. With that a central position of the subject is a good decision.
I like the proposition of Paul (without the black line), but the final choice is yours, and you have chosen to keep it.
There are still some spots next to the black line.
Nice website with a lot of beautiful pictures...
