About the Image(s)

I live in a small city outside of Minneapolis MN, where there are still fields that need harvesting. This one is across the road from our home, and when I saw the farmer start cutting hay, I walked over and asked if he would mind my taking some pictures. He said it was ok, so here is one I liked for B&W.

Taken with an Olympus EM1 MKIII and an Olympus 40-150mm Pro lens at 150mm. settings were 1/500th sec, f/6.3, ISO 200.

Processed in Lightroom, making some minor adjustments in the Basic tab, mask adjustments in the Masking tool for the foreground, background, and tractor and fork.

Converted to B&W in Silver Efex Pro 2 using preset 23 and adding a boarder.

Love the image David. I grew up in a small town that was surrounded by farmers. As a boy I was asked to help bale hay. That was before automatic bailers. Very dirty job.

Your image brought back many memories. Catching the farmer on the tractor at work was neat. Interesting how you decided to darken the background and foreground. Tack sharp and good light on the action. Jerry   Posted: 10/04/2024 15:59:18

The black and white processing really separates the green tractor from the green background as does the darkening of the surrounding farmland. I also like that you removed the sign. I live in Iowa and it looks a lot like that around here right now too.   Posted: 10/07/2024 23:26:42

This is my youth (some years ago...) in Belgium, but with smaller tractors, machines and farmlands. We forked the bales onto the wagon. Beautiful souvenirs... Thanks David.

Good conversion in B&W (removing of the disturbing element, ...) and processing of the light, as already mentioned by Jerry & Diane.   Posted: 10/13/2024 19:48:00

That is a nice old John Deere, small tractor for the size of field, must have taken him a while. I was bought up on a farm and we use to do this each year.
The grass detail is very good, but that light falling on the tractor is lovely and he stands outs well. The detail is spot on and makes for a good monochrome image. Very pleasing image. Farm Simulator 25 comes out next month. lol   Posted: 10/14/2024 11:45:48

What everyone else said. I like how the detail of the tractor and the farmer stands out. It's interesting how many in the Group have rural backgrounds. I grew up in the city, but have lived in rural areas for 30 years. My camera and I are fascinated by the farmers at work.   Posted: 10/14/2024 14:37:50

Very nice image, David. The contrast and light make the tractor and farmer stand apart from the field. The border gives it the field of an older photograph. I grew up in the SF Bay Area but my grandmother owned a cattle ranch in Livermore which is a bit east of there and we were there every weekend. I appreciate the rural subject here!   Posted: 10/16/2024 23:17:39
