November 2023 ~ A Small Towns Field of Flags by Marge Barham

November 2023 - November 2023 ~ A Small Towns Field of Flags

About the Image(s)

A few years ago, I drove to the small town of Kent, CT to photograph Kents charm along their streets. I came across this very touching memorial with signs in front mentioning the “Total American Casualties as of August 12,2010 ~ 5,631” on one sign and “Americans Honored in the Field of Flags” on another sign.

Each and every one lost serving our country is very sad to hear about but seeing this field of flags for each of those gone on that day makes a much stronger statement. And wars go on and on and on. This number is small compared to all the United States have lost in way too many wars, so on this Veterans Day I will think of those fighting now and just hoping they come back home.

Camera was Canon Rebel XSi, and setting were ISO 100, f6.3, 1/80 sec.

I think this is a good story telling image that is especially relevant at this time when we need to remvember that we are all Americans and that the flag is our symbol of unity and purpose. I cropped, increased the contrast and did some dodging and burning to make it just a field of flags.   Posted: 11/05/2023 22:10:17

Great storytelling Marge and thank you for sharing it. what I really like in your image is the dark shade spread on the Flags. It adds a lot of drama. without the house, the image is more powerful, with less distraction. Art"s post processing with the vignetting got my point of view for this image so I cannot add more. Except that I wish more Peace in this terrible moment we all are living.

Marge, I really like your picture and the message it conveys, beautifully done! I also prefer having the distractions removed and filling the frame only with the flags (Art's edit). A powerful image.   Posted: 11/19/2023 09:18:44

I agree Sylvia. Art made it much more powerful. It doesn't need to show anything more than the amount of flags.
