St Mary of the Lake Seminary Library by Howard Frank

May 2023 - St Mary of the Lake Seminary Library

About the Image(s)

I made this image at a recent outing to A seminary in suburban Chicago. It was on a second floor of a library building. I used a 15mm fisheye lens on my Nikon D500 as a 3 shot HDR. I edited it in Lightroom.

Hi Howard: Is this the same image that was shown this morning? I looked at it and had to leave, but I remember thinking that the railing seemed to be too far to the right. Looking at the image now, it looks perfect. I must be losing my mind. It is centered and the shadows add an additional flare. It is so sharp throughout. I easily see the chairs and rugs downstairs as well as the wall statues upstairs. I love this image and complement the precision of the shot.   Posted: 05/10/2023 16:36:37

Howard Really good shot with color and texture and making good composition out of something that I think is tough to organize visually My only concern is the ceiling. The first cross-beam is so bowed you'd think the building is on the verge of collapse. I will play with it but my first thought is to crop from the top to just above where the cord for the chandelier starts but without cutting the corner of the opening on the left or the top of the first. cornice Save you some time with playing with the geometry.   Posted: 05/11/2023 09:46:49

Howard, this is a really good image. I found using a fisheye very frustrating but you captured everything very nicely. The ceiling and the railing draw you right in and the statues in the walls are very identifiable adding to the vision.   Posted: 05/11/2023 14:38:13

Howard, Wow and double wow. What a great photo. This is a photo that really captures your eye. At first it does look like the photo is off-centered. It appears to be cropped more on the right side. Perhaps it's an optical illusion. There is no denying the sharpness of detail from the items on the first floor to the second floor
wall bust(s), railing and shadow of railing on the rug. The key to a photo of this magnitude is Symmetry for sure. Kudos to you Howard for such a great photo!   Posted: 05/16/2023 14:35:48
