Colorado Pelican by Bob Scott

August 2022 - Colorado Pelican

About the Image(s)

This was the only Pelican at the Lake at Fossil Creek Park in Fort Collins, at least for the morning this was taken. There were two blue herons, three cormorants and a.lot of ducks.. This shot was the result of shutting things down to prevent a cloud of light bouncing off the bird and a fairly heavy crop. The interesting thing is my eye only saw a pure white bird, but the photo produced this. I still had to tone down a bit of the white on the bird's head

Excellent detail on the eye and feathers especially compared to the softness of the reeds at this distance. While cropping, I would have left a bit more space at the bottom. An interesting fellow, well captured and well processed. I like the mirrored shapes at the water line.   Posted: 08/08/2022 00:42:16

Hi Bob: My eye goes straight to the pelican's eye and beak, and I marvel at the sharpness of everything in the bird. His color is beautiful. You caught the reflection perfectly. The reeds in the background are muted just right. I agree with Helen that a little more space at the bottom would be better, especially if this image were to be framed. Good Work.   Posted: 08/13/2022 09:31:58

Beautiful image with fantastic detail that carries into the reflection in the water perfectly. I think the crop is perfect. Nice capture.   Posted: 08/14/2022 18:35:49

The one thing I have learned about white birds like this is you really have to move to a higher f-stop or you get glare. In fact, I couldn't see this much detail with my own eyes--it seemed all white

Good capture of a fun subject. I know how hard it is to photograph a white subject in sunlight. I think the crop is ok, but I do think the pelican is a bit over sharpened.   Posted: 08/16/2022 09:43:08

Great shot, Bob! Only comment is that some of the highlights on the head, base of the neck and shoulder might still have some detail. Perhaps a local adjustment of -1/2 stop would bring that out. In any case I'd like that one on my wall :-)!   Posted: 08/18/2022 18:38:52

Great capture. Excellent sharpness and details. The reflection in the water and the colors of the Pelican are very nice. I would blur out the background a little more by using a larger aperture.   Posted: 08/29/2022 00:36:03
