Pieces and Parts by Howard Frank

June 2022 - Pieces and Parts

About the Image(s)

I made this image at a recent visit to the Illinois Railway Museum, which is one of the largest in the country. In addition to engines, railroad cars, buses, and signs, they have a large selection of parts in their yards. Taken with my Nikon Z9 and Nikkor Z 24 to 70 lens at F/11, ISO 800 at 1/400, this is a handheld 3 shot HDR image processed in Aurora HDR and Lightroom.

Howard, excellent monochrome HDR result. I really get that gritty, heavy industry feel from the image. I do find my eye pulled to the lower left away from the three gears on the right-center. I think those three make for an interesting composition on their own. Nice image...like it!   Posted: 06/06/2022 11:05:53

Very good photo and excellent choice for B/W. I think I would spend the time trying to edit out the small trees (or whatever plants) in the lower center and lower left. I wouldn't bother with the one in the lower right. There's not at all I don't like. Great detail. There's a bright metallic triangle if you go up from the big gear on the left and past those two joints or whoever they are about an inch and a half from the top left of the screen on my computer. I'd darken it or clone it out.   Posted: 06/12/2022 13:12:02

Well composed, taking my eye from front wheel past the block and along the other three. Well processed to get the full tonal range. I like all the texture. My husband, a train buff, knows of that museum and that there are streetcars too. It is now added to our list for our next trip to Chicago, hopefully in October.   Posted: 06/14/2022 19:21:51

I love this image exactly as it is shown, Howard. Could you share which filter you used to bring out this gritty texture, which is perfect for the subject? Well done.   Posted: 06/18/2022 12:06:04

Very beautiful B&W and HDR image. Great detail and very nice black and white conversion. Perhaps I would crop out the right side of the picture just a little bit to make the image more balance between left and right. Well done.   Posted: 06/25/2022 23:49:02
