Short-eared owl by Peter Cheung

October 2021 - Short-eared owl

About the Image(s)

The picture was taken in Skagit Valley, WA few years ago. Short-eared owl are often seen in the Skagit Flats during winter. They are small and agile. It is quite challenging to capture the short-eared owls in flight because they are very small and flying randomly. The camera settings that I used are Nikon D810, Nikon 200-500mm, f/5.6, 1/640 sec, ISO 1600. In post-processing, I cropped the photo to make the bird larger, and blurred the background a bit.

Amazing capture of such a fast bird in such a narrow depth of field! Good detail on the face where you want it. Fierce-looking eyes. I'd like him flying over my haunted house.   Posted: 10/10/2021 17:37:30

Very nice image. Crisp and clear with the blurred background accentuating the owl in flight. The eyes are haunting.   Posted: 10/13/2021 19:34:47

Great capture, just at the peak of action, you have to be at the right place at the right time. Good color and very good depth of field to blur the background. I know it's always a challenge to put the whole subject in sharp focus without having a sharp background. I don't mind that there is a blur in the wings. It shows motion.   Posted: 10/15/2021 18:05:53
