Mt. Rainier Sunset by Peter Cheung

June 2021 - Mt. Rainier Sunset

About the Image(s)

The picture was taken on the Upper Tipsoo Lake in Mt. Rainier National Park last weekend when Chinook Pass has just opened for the season. The road to the Tipsoo Lake is snow free and safe to drive. However, the lake is still mostly frozen and still lot of snow on the mountain. We were so lucky that there was beautiful cloud, and Mount Rainier was clear during sunset at that time. The camera settings I used are Nikon D850, Nikon 18-35mm, ISO-200, 1/250sec, f/9. In post-processing, I cropped the photo a little bit, slightly darkened the sky and brightened up the shadow, and increased the saturation of red and orange colors a little bit also.

Peter, this is wonderful! The reflection in the lake, like a hole in the snow, is unexpected and beautiful. The trees marching up the hill on the left draw my eye out of the frame, so I would crop at the bottom of the mountain. Possibly the same amount on the right to further draw attention to the lake.   Posted: 06/17/2021 11:51:32

Stunning image, Peter! As in Helen's comment, cropping the left side would enhance the lake as the focal point. However, I like the landscape format as the U shape profile draws my attention to the lake also. The width of the image emphasizes the expansiveness of the Rainier wilderness as well.   Posted: 06/17/2021 12:42:19

Really great color and on e reflection. Having texture in the snow also helps make this effective. I can't quibble with the suggestion of cropping.   Posted: 06/18/2021 00:17:07

Peter, great image. Your eye is drawn to the refelction and that captures the essence of the image. The sky and snow provide a nice contrast to compliment the photo.   Posted: 06/18/2021 14:30:06
