About the Image(s)

This is another image from my February trip to Door County WI. We tried to find good sunset spots on the Green Bay side of the Door County peninsula Unfortunately we did not find attractive sunsets, but rather really blustery winds and freezing cold. This shot was from halfway out on a frozen pier. The lake water on the Green Bay side was frozen several hundred yards out from shore. On the Lake Michigan side, the shore was lined with ice shoves (broken layers of ice stacked on top of each other). I tried it in B/W but thought the blue better reflected the cold.

Oh Baby it is cold outside!! This image is positively chilling. The cold blue tones really bring out the wintry feel. I like the leading lines of the pier, the flow of the ice and the distant tree line all lead out to the open sea and take the viewer deep into the scene. I am a fan of minimalism and this has that simple, clean feeling that adds to the chilly, icy cold.

There is not really much I would change other than removing that hint of warmth in the sky on the left. Without that little pink blush the below zero feel would make the viewer reach for a warm coat and hat.   Posted: 05/01/2022 10:37:48

I'm glad you didn't edit the image to B/W. The overall blue tone screams COLD! It's probably me, but does the horizon line sag a little to the right? Regardless great image.   Posted: 05/03/2022 17:53:24

I also thought the horizon sags to the right so I put the image in lightroom where I could better test it. The water is level but the higher tree line on the left creates a seeming optical illusian.   Posted: 05/09/2022 12:22:55

This is striking, Michael. I am drawn by the varied textures from the smoothness of leading-line pier to the choppiness and waviness of the water to the soft curves of the clouds. The blue chilliness of your wonderful image, however, reminds me why I moved from Green Bay to California.   Posted: 05/05/2022 09:33:41

Wow, that image does scream COLD! Great image! I like Larry's suggestion about removing the little hint of pink in the sky. Other that that I would not change a thing.   Posted: 05/16/2022 22:57:45

Being from Norway, I know exactly how it was there, cold and beautiful. I like the repeating triangles to the right.

My suggestion for improvement is to add some more contrast in the ice and darken the sea and perhaps lighten the sky at the horizon to make a clearer line between sea and the sky.   Posted: 05/17/2022 01:07:23
