About the Image(s)

School on the Hill
I captured this image a few days ago. In Bergen they liked to build schools and churches on hills with a view and I think this school is a good example of that. The boathouses are several hundred years old, and renovated to be used. The post processing is done in Photoshop except for the BW conversion that is done in Silver Effex Pro. I wanted to give attention to the school and used the sea and the boathouses as leading lines.

Camera: Fuji GFX 50 S with Canon TS24mm lens.

My first impression is that the composition does exactly what you intended. It creates a setting and its lines do lead me to the school. Where we differ is in the overall tone of the image. I will agree that the school is a bit brighter than the foreground and thus draws attention. I just feel that the image is a bit flat and would like to see greater contrast introduced. I realize that this is one of those maker's choice issues and you may prefer the less contrasty appearance. If that is your intention, then it is perfect as shown.   Posted: 01/09/2022 14:45:47

I like your composition with the positions of the schoolhouse and the boathouses, that the boathouses are straight and vertical, and the brightness of the schoolhouse. I agree with Larry that over all you could up the contrast. Have you used the whole tonal range from black to white? If not, that would help. To my eye it appears you have tried to lighten some of the buildings with a broad brush which makes the lighting uneven. I would consider cropping down the sky just a small amount. Again, great composition.   Posted: 01/10/2022 19:01:44

You did just what you wanted to do. I would not change a thing. Outstanding photo.   Posted: 01/12/2022 16:35:59

Black and white is a good choice for the image. It has a somewhat moody feel. I'm not sure if it would be improved with contrast. My eye is drawn to the school, so I would not change the lighting on the other buildings. I also like how you dodged and burned the buildings somewhat unevenly. It adds to the mood of the image.   Posted: 01/12/2022 23:44:33

I've got to say it's better after the conversion of B/W. My view is more fucused at the house detail, which is enlightened by the darken background.   Posted: 01/17/2022 02:39:13
