Light House on a Calm Day by Arne Skinlo

June 2021 - Light House on a Calm Day

About the Image(s)

Title: A light House a calm Day
This scene is from a light house on the west coast of Norway. It looks calm here, but it is one of the most hostile places on the coast when the winter storms occurs. The waves hit the house walls at the worst.

The post-processing is limited to some cropping and some minor colour adjustments.

Camera: Canon 5D mark 4 with Canon 24-70 mm lens at 31mm.
ISO 100, F/16, 1/60s

I love this type of scene. The lonely lighthouse, perched on a cliff I think makes special images This one, being white just pops from the scene. I bet those hostile waves would make for quite dramatic shots. Hope you plan on going back.

While I really like this scene I have two thoughts. First, since the sky is so plain, why not just eliminate it? Second, since you are the king of dodging and burning why not slightly darken the huge grassy hillside in the foreground? With the sky removed and the hillside darkened it should make the lighthouse pop even more.

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried out a middle way between yours and Bill`s comments. I think this works better.   Posted: 06/12/2021 12:37:31

This is a nice scene, and it is deceptively calm, given what you said about the place. I like Larry's suggestion about darkening the hill. I'm not sure I would completely eliminate the sky, I think a horizon line on this kind of scene is important, but you could crop out more of the sky, since it is so plain, maybe about 2/3rds of it.   Posted: 06/11/2021 23:29:12

This is a tricky image to expose correctly. It appears you nailed it. I like the composition of the diagonal line of the cliffs leading up to the lighthouse. The small group of rocks balance the weight of the lighthouse to my eye. I would agree with Larry about eliminating the sky and darkening the bottom right corner, maybe with the linear gradient tool. If you do that, I would consider slightly darkening the top of the image also with a gradient to keep the eye in the middle of the image. Good use of DOF too to get the whole image sharp.   Posted: 06/13/2021 21:08:04

Great location and I like the pop of white from the lighthouse. I would tend to agree with everyone about eliminating the sky and make the focus on the lighthouse and the white caps along the rocks. Possibly adding the radial filter tool to draw an area around the subject and reduce exposure would make the lighthouse stand out even more. Nice image!   Posted: 06/16/2021 20:42:36
