About the Image(s)
This photograph was captured at Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia last January. While visiting a nearby town, I decided to take a brief detour to explore the mill and take a few photos.
My stay at the mill was short, as it was quite cold despite the sunny skies. Minor adjustments were made in Lightroom. I look forward to feedback as I am on the fence about this photo.

Hi Barbara,
I like this picture, there is something special/unique to it that I really can't put my finger on. I like it for the color (the building and the mill) but at the same time it is a bit "flat" for me. Perhaps add more contrast to it to make the building and mill "pop" more? Just a thought... I could be wrong though...   Posted: 10/12/2024 05:15:43

Thanks Jennie. I have edited this scene using different techniques so feedback on this particular editing process is good to hear.   Posted: 10/26/2024 16:20:31

One of the most popular photo sites in the eastern US, Mabry Mill is certainly an iconic subject. Dropped into a mountain" bowl, the old wood works quite well with the foliage at any time of the year. I feel the exposure and sharpness of the image work perfectly but, at least for me, the image feels like a RAW file that was never processed. Perhaps adding some contrast, adjusting Dehaze and the highlight might breathe some life into the old mill. It is a subject worth visiting anytime of the year, even in the snow.   Posted: 10/12/2024 17:38:48

Thanks for your feedback Larry. I have several photos with different editing techniques that I use. It was good to hear the feedback for this editing process.   Posted: 10/26/2024 16:21:28

I like you put the mill in context of its surroundings. I agree with Larry that for some reason it lacks contrast. More clarity, pegging the whites and blacks and putting a "S" in the tone curve would help. For me, I would slightly darken the green slope on the left. The human eye is drawn to the color green, and this grabbed my eye.   Posted: 10/12/2024 23:58:02

This is a Classic. I live 40 min away from the Mill so I go visit it once every while. I do believe That this is the best position for the composition. I took it with a slow shutter to chow the movement of the wheel.

I don't live close by, just 889 miles away but I've been there several times, at least one in all four season. Once when the Blue Ridge HWY was closed and I had to hike up to the mill on the access road in the snow. My car would never have made it through the snow. For me, I like the reflection to show in the pond. That is my favorite shot (except in the snow) MAybe we should have a DD Group 36 photo shoot.   Posted: 10/13/2024 19:00:31

Thanks Adi. I live about 90 miles away and need to visit more often especially during the different seasons!   Posted: 10/26/2024 16:25:06

I really like the composition and subject, but I do have to agree with the others, the lighting is really flat. Some of it may have to do with the time of day it was taken. I think it could definitely be fixed in post, maybe bring down the brightness and add some contrast and try bumping up the vibrance/saturation a little.   Posted: 10/28/2024 06:12:42
