Batu Bolong Beach Pacatu Bali by Arief Rahardjo

June 2021 - Batu Bolong Beach Pacatu Bali

About the Image(s)

This was one of my photo practise when I have a chance in early covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia on March 2020. I travel to Bali with my wife on the event of silent day in Bali. We went to Batu Bolong Beach, Pacatu, Bali.
I set my camera on tripod, attach gradual ND Filter to camera lens. Then using cable shutter release to capture several frames.
My intention was to practice slow speed, to make combination between the strong black rock with the soft of sea water on the beach.

Technical data :
Camera on tripod : Canon EOS RP, Lens : Canon EFS 18-200 f/3.5 - 5.6 IS
Filter : ND4
Focal Length : 32 mm
Exposure : 0.8 sec (Auto)
Aperture : f/16
ISO : 100
Mode : Semi Auto (Aperture Priority)
Focus : Auto Focus Point : Centerweighted-Average Metering

Looking at this I thing you have got the shot for the sea and the surf just right, I would try and pull back the highlights a touch as they are very burn out. The problem I have is the main subject matter is very blocked out. Maybe a second shoot for the rocks and then bright the two image together so we have more detail in the rocks and stones so they stand out in the image more would lift the image. Looks like a Flintstone Submarine.   Posted: 06/10/2021 06:28:00

I like the long exposure for the water in the foreground, but my tastes, I like large waves a bit more defined and less blurred. So I might attempt several shots at various speeds and then blend them into a final composition. I agree with Paul, a second exposure for just the rock details would add a lot to the scene.   Posted: 06/10/2021 10:21:35

I looked again. I'm a dinosaur in this club of photographers.

You did a good job with this. Maybe next time, a little more detail in the island.   Posted: 06/11/2021 23:32:29

I really like the foreground with the blurred lines. The rock could be brought out better. In Lightroom I would use the luminance mask for this.   Posted: 06/19/2021 11:17:03
