I’ve done very little to this shot of Elena. She had chosen a sixties style dress, which I pointed out was my youth, although I never had the Mary Quant haircut. I did have the mini dresses and stark patterns though. Elena was standing rather stiffly because she’d hurt her back and then she started moving her arms around and I snatched several shots and told her how we used to dance. I felt this gave a feel of sixties dancing. I tried cropping her legs off but it looked all wrong so I only took a very small bit off. The lighting is two large softboxes, one to each side with a slightly lower brightness on the right side. The background is a black drop as is the floor.. I thought the mono was better-more in keeping with sixties photos.

This is interesting, going back to the 60s. I don't recall this style over here, but I never followed fashion, then or now. One of our grand-daughters has been writing us letters asking us to tell her stories of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Who would have thought that would ever seem like a long time ago to some people?
About the lighting, I don't know anything about light boxes, but I think I would have preferred greater difference between the light from the two sides, because I don't see anything but a trace of shadow on the model's right side face.   Posted: 09/03/2023 15:09:06

I can't believe you didn't have this sixties style in the States! It was so prevalent here and I thought worldwide. I loved it and at the time, being skinny, it suited me as well! I've noticed short skirts are around again, but unfortunately they don't look good on chubby legs - the look was to emphasize the length of legs which seemed to 'go up to the model's armpits'! This is probably a sexist statement nowadays but is what we used to say. I was attempting to produce that angularity of movement and shape which is reflected in the starkness of the dress and fitted perfectly with converting to mono. here, the mono is better than the colour original.   Posted: 09/04/2023 04:46:04

Oh yeah, we had these styles here! As a kid, I would have loved a dress/hairstyle like this, so cool!!! Well done!   Posted: 09/10/2023 15:46:01

We had that style here, as a young man, I did notice young women.   Posted: 09/10/2023 16:42:35

It almost looks like Rembrandt Lighting with the (light and small) shadow of the nose onto the cheek. Otherwise it looks like Broad Lighting with contrasting tonalities on the two sides (cheeks).
Nicely posed. Black and White dress is attractive. Black backdrop works well.
Lovely lady......lovely photo.

I like the lighting, it does show some direction, but not so much that it has strong shadows. I think that it is well posed and a good subject for monochrome, with the black and white dress. The black background makes the Elena stand out. I am glad that you did not crop at the knees, as I was told that that is a no no, do not crop at a joint.   Posted: 09/10/2023 16:48:54
