About the Image(s)

The photo of the Golden Gate Bridge from the Marin (County) Headlands is one of my earlier transparency photographs since retirement. It won a First Place/Novice at the Utah State Fair in 2002 or 03 as a color print. I've printed it large and small and on Greeting Cards. I thought it might be a good candidate for an upcoming portfolio of "Etchings" which is the primary image for this DD32 Review. The color is the original, and the BW is an interim. The Etchings version doesn't show well without a matte and frame, so I included them in this review. (Etchings preceded photographs in the sequence of reproducible images.)

First off, it's a great classic shot, both the view, and the far tower rising out of the fog bank. Both the color and monochrome shots are so impressive.
The etching effect is very attractive for the bridge towers and roadbed, but I don't find it expresses the fog very well. I wonder how it would look if you restricted the etching effect only to the visible bridge structure.   Posted: 12/03/2021 23:27:54

We are starting to have some heavy winter fog here in the Central Valley, although San Francisco's fog can be a year-round occurrence, of course. It makes for neat photos, but also for some scary driving conditions. I like the color version of your image best, as the contrast between the red, white and blue colors helps make the image stand out to me. The monochrome seems to be losing some of that crispness, although adding more contrast might bring some of that back. I do agree with Stephen that the etching effect makes the fog more difficult for me to interpret, so if there is a way to apply the etching more selectively or only partially to the fog, it could be worth a try.   Posted: 12/04/2021 03:39:42

I like the color image the best, but understand that you are trying an etching. I like the bridge in the etching, but the fog seems kind of strange.   Posted: 12/06/2021 08:47:48

I like the monochrome version you've presented here and the composition is indeed a classic. Increasing the contrast for the monochrome version will help bring out more detail. As for the etching, I agree with the comments above that it's difficult determine these are clouds. Maybe less texture or limiting to just the bridge would help..   Posted: 12/12/2021 08:40:22

I'm not a fan of the etchings version as somehow it seems to have made the bridge look slightly deformed and some of the wires have been lost coming down from the front tower. I like the colour version -as Jennifer says the red white and blue look crisp. The mono does seem to have lost some of that contrast. I know you are all accustomed to seeing the fog bank around the bridge but I find it very interesting and it provides endless opportunities for photography. Here we've just got unrelenting rain at the moment!   Posted: 12/28/2021 05:44:20
