About the Image(s)

When I took this image, my purpose was to portray the personality of the subject. It was taken with natural light, and a Nikon 70 to 200mm lens and no fill light. Post processing included a small crop and then converting to monochrome using Nik Silver Effects Pro.

Looking forward to the group's comments.

Is a nice image Lynne. For me I would like to see more of her body & less empty space above her head. Also, a thin white/gray border might be a nice add. What do you think? Otherwise I like your composition, natural light & pose.   Posted: 06/04/2021 21:29:51

I presume your light source is a large open doorway or window, casting fairly diffuse light. This is a great source of light for portraiture.
Your model seems very comfortable with herself, and with you being present, and that makes the image.
I have no suggestions for improvement, but one for further experimentation. Consider turning your model a little more away from the light source, so as to deepen the shadow on the dark side of her nose. That would slightly sharpen the Rembrandt Triangle of light on the right side.   Posted: 06/04/2021 23:45:29

Here is a sample of what I mean--my younger daughter practicing to play the music at her older sisters wedding.   Posted: 06/06/2021 15:13:40

Nice portrait of a self assured woman. To me, she is a hard working person, maybe in a factory. Maybe like "Rosy the Riveter" in WWII.   Posted: 06/09/2021 16:32:20

I agree that a 2px outline should be added to define the edge of the picture. I also think you should crop slightly so that there is less space behind her and above. I tried darkening the gap between her bun and her shoulder as well as the corners so she appears more gently from the background. I do like the pose-she looks as if she knows who she is and what she wants. I like the lighting effect as well.   Posted: 06/12/2021 09:12:49

Love the crop and the darkening by the bun. I rarely do portraits so any feedback is appreciated!   Posted: 06/18/2021 15:21:25

Wonderful portrait.
The comments seem to revolve around cropping and spacing. I think Diana's rendition is just what the young lady needs. I love the low key Nik.

Do you recall what pre-set you used in Nik SilverEfex?   Posted: 06/16/2021 16:32:45

I agree with the crop…it looks great. I can't remember which preset I chose in NIK, but I know it wasn't any of the portrait choices. I think it was the second high contrast choice, but sometimes I mess around with the sliders in the preset.   Posted: 06/18/2021 15:20:09

It worked, whatever. And I can't recall what pre sets I use most of the time.

I know very little about portrait photography. However, it seems the pose, background, and even the lighting you've used here suit your subject well. I debated whether I might make the eyes just a little brighter, but it seemed that changed the mood of the image. I do like Diana's suggestions.   Posted: 06/22/2021 23:16:28

Excellent. I think variations of shadow lightening might be interesting to see.   Posted: 06/24/2021 15:41:57
