About the Image(s)

Wild Joker

Another light painting image. This image was one of several I was working on for the Boise Camera Club assigned subject “Willy Nelson”. This image is about playing poker with a fantasy hand & $1,000,000 funny money. So with that hand & Jokers being wild It has to be a winner. The adjustments are very minor = this image is near SOOC. Converted to B&W with Silver Efex Pro 2. Taken with Fujifilm XT-3, 50/2, f/16, 20 sec, ISO 160.

Nicely done. I particularly like the reflections of the cards in the glasses. Maybe the white of the cards could be a touch brighter?   Posted: 05/03/2021 22:33:55

Thanks Stephen, I like your suggestion.   Posted: 05/04/2021 13:35:43

The reflections in the sun glasses really add to the image. I do like the monochrome version much better than the color. I wish that you had put a stroke around the image to separate the black edges of the image from the black webpage. The image did seem a bit "muddy" to me, and I adjusted the levels in Photoshop.   Posted: 05/04/2021 10:48:56

Your fix makes this a better image. Taking away the mud & the photoshop adjustment works for me. Thanks Tom for taking time & your help.   Posted: 05/04/2021 13:44:14

Yes, increasing contrast (with the white) shows an improved image.

I read somewhere that the comparison to the comment that "There are three important factors in Real Estate; and they are Location, location, and location," has a parallel in monochrome: Where the three important factors are Contrast, contrast, and contrast." This isn't dogma, but something to consider.   Posted: 05/04/2021 18:58:22

I found this a bit odd with the glasses on the hat and I wondered whether it would be better-different if they had simply been on the table. With them on the hat it was a bit like the invisible man scenario. The reflection is good and the contrast much improved in Tom's version. I'm afraid I don't play cards so I can't comment on how good or bad the hand is.   Posted: 05/09/2021 08:54:35

The hat is part of the western gambling look I was trying to get. But without the hat would make a interesting image. I also thinks Tom's version is an improvement. With the Joker being wild makes this hand 5 aces & I think the best hand possible. Thanks for your comments   Posted: 05/09/2021 20:49:10

This image made me smile as it really is western gambling at its core. Being a less than adequate card player (roulette & craps more my games) the hand displayed would be an unlikely event. As already commented, the mirrored glasses add a lot of interest as do the chips. Tom did a good job increasing the contrast and only adds to an already good capture. I understand Diana's invisible man thought, but the cards, chips and money neutralize that thought. The monochrome choice is absolutely the best choice. Very nice.   Posted: 05/22/2021 13:27:24

I'm afraid I cannot relate to risking large sums of money, but you've done a nice job with the story-telling aspect of this image. I agree with Tom that adding more contrast is an improvement. I think I'd like the left side of the image just a little bit brighter as well.   Posted: 05/31/2021 12:28:07
